The Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Research Council, Professor Vicki Sara, has resigned from her position after seven years at the head of the Council.
Professor Sara has overseen the establishment of the ARC as an independent agency, and the introduction of its National Competitive Grants Program. She was appointed the inaugural CEO of the Council in June 2001.
Professor Sara told R&D Info that she will remain in the position until the second stage of Backing Australia's Ability (BAA2) is settled in this year's May budget. She said that she is confident of the future for research in Australia and that she looks forward to a continuing involvement with science and research.
2. BRAIN RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR QUEENSLAND
A $60 million Queensland Brain Institute is to be established at the University of Queensland , with funding provided equally by the Queensland Government, the University of Queensland and a philanthropic organization. The Institute will house 240 scientists and 60 other staff, and will focus on understanding how the brain works and on finding cures and ways of alleviating brain-related illnesses and disorders. The Institute will be headed by Professor Perry Bartlett. Construction will start in early 2005.
NSW Parliament's Standing Committee on State Development has completed its inquiry into science and commercialisation in NSW, putting forward a number of recommendations designed to strengthen ties between scientists and the NSW government. The Committee has called for the creation of an office of the Chief Scientist of NSW; a review of science education curriculum and training for teachers; direct government assistance in the protection of intellectual property and commercial brokerage; the creation of direct incentives for public sector scientists if their work is commercialized; and a "NSW Science in Parliament" day.
4. NEC TO SET UP BROADBAND R&D FACILITY IN VICTORIA
NEC Australia has announced that it will establish a $70 million NEC Next Generation Broadband R&D Facility in Victoria, creating 63 new technology jobs. The new facility will be Australia's largest privately owned ICT R &D centre and NEC's largest research operation outside Japan.
