1. NEW SME TECHNOLOGY ADVISORY SERVICE
AusIndustry has launched a new service for small and medium sized enterprises, Industry Techlink, which provides access to free technology advice through a hotline phone service (1800 111 485), an interactive website (http://www.industrytechlink.com.au) and an e-mail service (enquiries@industrytechlink.com.au).
The service, delivered by Melbourne company Consultel on behalf of the Federal Government, aims to provide companies looking for technology solutions with a starting point to solve problems. The Industry Techlink Inquiry Centre will be staffed by technology consultants who will 'case manage' each inquiry through to diagnosis of the customer's problem and a suggested way forward.

2. SMART AWARDS FOR QUEENSLAND
The Queensland Government has initiated new awards to recognise the contribution of science, technology and innovation to business success in Queensland. The Premier of Queensland's Smart Awards, to be announced at a gala dinner in July, will provide prizes of $10,000 in each of the categories of Services, Mining or Minerals Processing, Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Science or Technology. An overall winner will be awarded the Premier of Queensland's SMART Award of the year and will win a further $10,000 in air travel.

3. CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER - Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre: Emerging Infectious Disease

The Centre is being established as a joint venture under the Federal Government's Cooperative Research Centres Programme. The Centre will commence operations in July 2003 with total resources of $70M over seven years. The Centre's mission is to develop new capabilities to monitor, assess, predict and respond to emerging infectious disease threats which impact on national and regional biosecurity. This will be achieved through the Centre's core programs - research, education and training, and knowledge and technology transfer.

Joint venture partners include research organisations, livestock industry groups, diagnostic companies, and Commonwealth and State government agencies with policy and regulatory responsibility for health and biosecurity. The Centre's major research nodes are in Geelong, Brisbane, Sydney and Perth, with partners also in Bangkok, New York and Winnipeg.

The Board of the Centre seeks to appoint an inaugural Chief Executive Officer. The position affords an outstanding opportunity to lead an international team of world-class research scientists, and animal and human health professionals.

The Chief Executive Officer will report to the Board and be responsible for establishing the Centre as a national and international hub for high impact multidisciplinary research in exotic and emerging infectious disease, and education and training programs that are responsive to industry needs. Key responsibilities include establishing an overall strategic direction and operational framework, and managing resources to achieve the Centre's objectives.

The position requires extensive research management experience in the public or private sectors involving multi-site and technically diverse programs. Experience should be complemented by knowledge of biosecurity issues and infectious disease, and qualifications in the veterinary, medical or biological science fields. The successful applicant will bring vision and leadership to the Centre, and possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A demonstrated commitment to collaborative approaches to R&D, and building linkages across the academic, government, industry and community sectors, is essential.

The position is a professional appointment for seven years, with performance reviews after one, three and five years. A competitive remuneration package will be negotiated.

4. CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER - CRC for Sugar Industry Innovation

The CRC for Sugar Industry Innovation through Biotechnology will conduct an integrated program of scientific research aimed at providing sugarcane varieties with reliable high yields of sugar and high-value biomaterials, and novel processes for extraction of renewable biomaterials, within a context of environmental sustainability.

The CRC seeks a Chief Executive Officer to manage the operations of a program of research for the Australian sugar industry.

This will be a term appointment, for a period of seven years. An attractive remuneration package consistent with the significance of the position will be negotiated.

5. PROFESSOR OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES - Northern Territory University

Applications are invited for the position of Professor of Biomedical Sciences in the School of Health Sciences. The successful applicant will take a leadership role in the development of biomedical, medical and allied health education and research at the University. The appointee will oversee and contribute to the delivery and development of new courses in Biomedical Science and expanded offerings to medical students and allied health professionals. The Chair will be expected to develop and maintain a strong research program, to mentor staff and to be active in the training of research students.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in an appropriate area of biomedical science with an excellent record in teaching and research in a main field of biomedical science relevant to the training of medical students such as molecular or cell biology and human physiology. A primary qualification in medicine may be advantageous. Demonstrated capacity to lead curriculum development and teaching in biomedical, medical and allied health programs will be essential.

6. CLINICAL TRIAL MANAGER/PHARMACEUTICAL ADVISOR - Imaginot Pty Ltd

A vacancy exists for a Clinical Trial Manager/ Pharmaceutical Advisor to provide support to Professor Michael Roberts of the University of Queensland, School of Medicine, Southern Clinical Division, at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

In this position you will be required to contribute to the design, monitoring, data management and quality assurance of clinical studies to meet TGA and FDA standards.

You will also be expected to assist in:
•Providing therapeutics advice
•Research, development and preparation of reports/ proposals; review, documentation and analysis of the emerging pharmaceutical literature; and preparation of reports and proposals
•Research, administration, education, clinical and other relevant activities relevant to his group's research and UQ activities as well as the nurturing and conduct of external consultancies with various organisations including Imaginot.

You should possess a pharmacy degree or equivalent combination of qualifications and experience, together with high level communication and organisational skills. A PhD in an aspect of pharmaceutical science, pharmacy or related field and/or practical experience would be preferred although not essential for the position.

An opportunity exists to join a progressive team in the School of Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences. The Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization is located within the School, with main research thrusts in applied optimization, software engineering, distributed simulation, case-based reasoning, knowledge based systems, data security, data mining in the domains of law, health and economic modelling, health informatics, information retrieval, mathematics and statistics education, topological groups and mathematical finance. Current projects include the telecommunications, health, business and chemical modelling industries.
