1. INTERNATIONAL CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE
The Department of Education, Science and Training is staging a series of information forums to clarify the role of the new International Centres of Excellence which were awarded funding of $35.5 million in last month's budget.
There will be four centres funded under the program. One of them, the International Centre of Excellence in Asia Pacific Studies and Diplomacy, will be located at the ANU, in collaboration with other institutions with relevant expertise. It will receive funds of $8.8 million over four years.
The other three centres, to be selected by a competitive process, will be in the areas of Mathematics Education, Sports Science and Administration, and Water Resources Management.
Environment Minister, Dr David Kemp, announced in his budget statement that the International Centre of Excellence in Water Resources Management will receive funding of $6.7 million over three years, but it is not yet clear how the remaining money will be divided.
2. JCU/CSIRO TROPICAL FORESTS MERGER MOOTED
The Federal Government's interest in combining the research efforts of universities and research agencies has been highlighted in comments made by the Minister for Fisheries, Forestry and Conservation, Senator Ian Macdonald.
Senator Macdonald foreshadowed a possible amalgamation of the the CSIRO Tropical Forest Research Centre at Atherton in Queensland with James Cook University's Australian Tropical Forests Institute in Cairns.
In a statement following a visit to the CSIRO Atherton centre, Mr Macdonald said he would be discussing with the Science Minister, Peter McGauran, ways in which the scientific work being conducted at Atherton could be enhanced, and the possible creation of Atherton as a campus of JCU.
The affiliation between the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and James Cook University (JCU), which received funding of $5 million through the Cooperative Research Centres program in the Federal Budget, is to be managed by a steering committee chaired by Queensland grazier and businessman, Donald McDonald. Mr McDonald recently completed a 5 year term on the board of CSIRO.
Other members of the steering committee are Elizabeth Nosworthy, Brisbane lawyer and business woman; Professor Derek Moulden, Vice-Chancellor of James Cook University; and Professor Stephen Hall, Chief Executive Officer of AIMS.
