1. TECHNOLOGY AUSTRALIA INVESTMENT BRAND LAUNCHED

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston has launched a new Technology Australia brand to promote Australian technology capabilities internationally and to attract technology investment to Australia. The initiative was developed by Invest Australia in the light of the Commonwealth Government's National Investment Framework (NIF), released in December 2002, which identified ICT, biotechnology and nanotechnology as the three key areas that should receive priority attention by the Government. These three priority areas and key Australian capabilities will be marketed under the Technology Australia brand. State and territory governments, who are collaborating with the Commonwealth in developing and implementing the Technology Australia brand, will also actively promote investment opportunities through Technology Australia. Position No: 9473
The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has a new and exciting opportunity for a Science Communications oordinator, within the Victorian Institute of Animal Science (VIAS). You will have a passion for science and a commitment to developing and delivering effective communication and public relations strategies. We want our scientific achievements to shine in the community and see communication as a key tool in keeping science exciting, and relevant.

The role will include providing public relations advice and material, managing high profile events, maintaining the information on the VIAS intranet and external website and establishing marketing plans which will contribute to the commercial viability of research performed by the Institute. You will liaise with the media, as well as communications staff from the Department and other government and partner organisations, to enhance the accomplishments of the Institute.
The successful applicant must be able to demonstrate:

* relevant experience in a compatible field of science and a demonstrated ability for science communication using a variety networks;

* highly developed written and verbal communication skills with ability to present information of a scientific and technical nature to a diverse audience in an appropriate manner;

* proven experience in strategic communication, risk management and project management;

* a professional track record in media liaison together with a demonstrated capacity to develop effective media networks;

* an ability to work in a highly sensitive, complex and demanding environment, with
a high degree of responsibility and self-management, and demonstrated ability to
meet tight deadlines; and

* an appropriate skill level in operating within a computer based environment.

The successful applicant must hold an appropriate qualification in a relevant
science with experience in public relations, journalism or scientific feature
writing.
