1. CSIRO PREVENTATIVE HEALTH FLAGSHIP LAUNCHED
CSIRO's
Preventative Health National Research Flagship (P-Health). has been launched,
and will focus on five research themes: colorectal cancer; cardiovascular disease;
inflammatory disease; neuro-degenerative disease; and environment and health.
P-Health is a nation-wide partnership of research institutions, health bodies
and companies, including CSIRO, Neurosciences Australia, the National Ageing
Research Institute, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and the universities
of Melbourne, Adelaide, Flinders and South Australia. It also maintains links
with the National Health and Medical Research Council.
Director of p-Health, Professor Richard Head, said the program will promote
the objectives of 'wellness' and disease prevention and develop a range of measures
- from foods and diets to early-stage diagnosis and improved management of disease
- to assist healthcare professionals and individuals to reduce the incidence
and severity of ill-health.
CSIRO
has also launched its Energy Transformed research flagship, under the leadership
of Director, Dr John Wright. The Energy Transformed research flagship aims to:
* develop and implement technologies leading to near zero emissions power from
fossil fuels and eventually, large-scale hydrogen generation;
* develop cost-effective electricity and hydrogen from renewable sources;
increase the fuel and traffic management efficiency of urban transport leading
to an eventual transition to hydrogen-powered vehicles;
* double the efficiency of fuel use (natural gas and eventually hydrogen) by
the generation of power/heat/cooling at point-of-use; and
* carry out energy scenario analyses to guide the research activities of the
Flagship to achieve the goal of clean, cost-effective future energy for all
Australians.
More information about the CSIRO Flagships is at http://www.csiro.au
3. VICTORIAN INNOVATION BOARD PROJECTS
The
Victorian Government's Innovation Economy Advisory Board is undertaking several
projects as part of its mission to identify ways in which Victoria can improve
productivity through innovation.
In addition to the Innovation Audit, for which a draft report was released in
August, the Board is conducting projects on environmental technologies and industries
in Victoria; creative capital in Victoria; and innovation and skills development
in the workplace.
The Creative Capital in Victoria project is examining how best-practice creative
enterprises in the Victorian creative industries manage, foster, promote and
capture employee creativity; and how to foster new trans-disciplinary linkages
and collaboration between the arts and sciences in Victoria.
The Innovation & Skills Development in the Workplace project is developing
case studies of innovation systems in companies which highlight two types of
innovation - continuous innovation and breakthrough innovation.
The Environmental technologies and industries in Victoria project is examining
issues identified at a workshop held in July including regulatory environment;
medium and longer term opportunities for industry development; and industry
promotion.

4. SA PROGRAM TO BOOST SCIENCE & MATHS
The
South Australian Government is investing $2.1 million in a 14-point action plan
to arrest declining interest among young people in science and mathematics.
The three-year program will aim to attract students to science and mathematics
subjects at high school and university levels and also to address the shortage
of science and mathematics teachers in SA by attracting more people to the vocation
and retaining existing teachers.
Initiatives under the program include:
* $878,000 over three years to set up 48 focus schools that will explore ways
technology can be used to make science and mathematics popular among students.
* Industry placements for 36 driven science and mathematics teachers.
* A Science and Mathematics Career Expo.
* 20 scholarships for disadvantaged and Aboriginal students to attend the Australian
Science and Mathematics School (ASMS).
* Scholarship for 10 teachers to train as leaders in science and mathematics.
* A working party to look at the future recruitment and supply of science and
mathematics teachers in South Australia.
* Pairing up teaching students with the State's best science and mathematics
teachers for mentoring and work experience.
* Development of print resources, a website for students and teachers and action
research trials in up to five high schools.
5. WA WATER RESEARCH FOUNDATION LAUNCHED
The
Western Australian Government has announced the establishment of the Premier's
Water Research Foundation which will have the role of promoting and enhancing
water-related research across the state.
The Foundation will encourage and monitor the development of water related technologies
across all water usage sectors, especially in the areas of treated wastewater
and stormwater
The Foundation, which will receive $3 million from the State Government, will
be chaired by Charlie Welker, chairman of the Swan River Trust.
An
online directory of Tasmanian information communications technology (ICT) companies
funded by the Intelligent Island Program has been launched by Deputy Premier

The IntelligentIsland.com.au directory currently contains information on more
than 90 companies.
The website will also function as a centralised information distribution point
